Spring into your career

Dear alumni,

Spring is a season for growth, and this Spring the AUCAA is inviting you to grow professionally! Whether you are just starting out in the labour market, or you're further along in your career, the AUCAA can help you with your professional development. In particular, the AUCAA is inviting young alumni to join the Springboard Career Event, taking place next week. For our more established alumni we encourage them to return to AUC as mentors, and to participate in a networking event we will organise later this year.

Keep an eye out on the AUCAA's social media and newsletters so you never miss out on alumni events. If you're inspired to (co)organise an alumni event, let us know and we can help out.

Best,
Gerylaine Campos

Alumni & External Relations Officer, on behalf of AUCAA board

Leo Wein invited AUCAA Chair Thao Lam to visit Protenga, his start-up based in Malaysia. Protenga is 4500-sq meter farm and factory that uses local palm oil waste products to feed insects to create an energy-efficient and sustainable source of protein for aquaculture, livestock feed and pet food. The start-up is now embarking on a new challenge: a 9-fold increase in production in a new facility and a pipeline of farm projects all around Malaysia. Check out the article to learn more!

Paul Lodder'18 discovers error in published academic paper

For the course Neural Dynamics and Deep Learning, Paul Lodder came across a paper from the University of Valparaíso in Chile led by researcher Rubén Herzog. The article was about what happens in the brain when taking LSD and used a computer model to claim that LSD results in higher levels of entropy in the brain. Seeing inconsistency with other papers, Paul tried to reproduce the results by replicating the computer model, but actually found the model showed lower levels of entropy in the brain. The discrepancy was found to be an error in the researchers' code leading to the paper being retracted. Lodder went on to explain how more transparency in code and having computer science students double-check models could help prevent such errors in research. You can read more via the link below.

AUC course "Peace Lab" visits Rwanda for the first edition taking place on site

Peace Lab is taking place for the first time on-site in Rwanda in January 2023. Due to the impact of the pandemic, the previous two editions were forced to take place entirely online. Under the guidance of Dr. Anne de Graaf, AUC students are currently in Rwanda on a 10-day field trip to learn about post-conflict reconstruction and state-building first-hand through visits and meetings with organisations such as the UN, NGOs, youth peacebuilders, women’s groups, and local residents. You can read their reflections and follow their journey by visiting their blog via the link below.

In the spotlight: UvA and the smart city - experts on the pitfalls and potential

Cities are becoming smart. Their inhabitants and visitors are walking data points that provide large amounts of information. Governments and other parties are learning about who we are, where we go and what we like to do. In this extended multimedia article, UvA researchers examine the massive potential, pitfalls and impact of all this knowledge on a society whose members are connected to each other non-stop (and who may or may not be aware of this). You can read more about this focus theme by following the link below.

Show your support for the AUC Scholarship Fund

One of the ways in which you can support diversity in the AUC student body (if you are willing and able), is to become a donor of the ASF. As a university that values diversity so highly, it is essential that talented students are actually granted the means to participate. The UvA, VU, and AUC are currently the largest donors of the ASF, but more funds are needed in order to support as many talented and diverse students as possible. Even the smallest donations can make a difference, and will be much welcomed.
