| UvA archaeologists contribute to research on defensive fort in Sri Lanka | UvA archaeologists Jitte Waagen, Mikko Kriek and James Symonds are working with municipal archaeologist Ranjith Jayasena and Sri Lankan colleagues on research into the Balana Fort; a rare, well-preserved defensive structure from the Kingdom of Kandy. The project, initiated by alumnus Chryshane Mendis, offers a new perspective on Sri Lanka’s history during the era of European colonial expansion. Thanks to a drone equipped with a laser scanner from the 4D Research Lab, the archaeologists can map the site without disturbing it. | |
