In his research project ‘International Adjudication in Inter-State Relations,’ Geraldo Vidigal explores the roles of adjudication in inter-state relations, state resistance to judicial oversight, and state attempts to reform adjudicators. He recently spoke to Dutch national newspaper De Telegraaf (paywall) about international economic relations in times of pandemic, geopolitical rivalry and suspicion of international institutions.

Organised by the Open Society Justice Initiative and ACIL, a workshop with 35 (inter)national criminal justice practitioners and experts in investigating and prosecuting international crimes and monitoring the respective proceedings devised recommendations for improving the operations of the ICC Office of the Prosecutor (OTP).

Isabel Feichtner (University of Würzburg) has been following the international negotiations on deep seabed mining from an international law and political economy perspective for several years. After her lecture in the Sustainable Global Economic Law series she speaks to us about value, values and valuation, the bias of international legal institutions and gives an inside perspective on negotiations at the International Seabed Authority.

Andrea Leiter is joining the Amsterdam Center for International Law in August 2020 as Assistant Professor. Her research focuses on technology enabled governance and is embedded in the Sustainable Global Economic Law (SGEL) project.

ACIL/SLIC research fellow Ahmed Al Zien is conducting research within the ‘Rethinking Secondary Liability for International Crimes’ (Rethinking SLIC) project. Under the supervision of project leader Professor Göran Sluiter, he is working on a case study on Syria within the broader project. He joined a team of four PhD candidates.

Marc Tiernan joined ACIL and the department of Criminal Law as a PhD Candidate in December 2019. His research forms part of a broader project on “The Outer Limits of Secondary Liability for International Crimes and Serious Human Rights Violations”. Specifically, Marc's research will focus on secondary criminal liability.

Lys Kulamadayil joined the ACIL in May 2020 as a post-doctoral research fellow to conduct research on her project 'Depleted Fortunes,' which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). During her time at ACIL she will investigate law-making in reaction to environmental resources scarcity.

ACIL visiting fellow Elisabetta Baldassini, PhD candidate at the University of Macerata, is conducting research on China’s contribution to the development of International Criminal Law.

|
ACIL visiting fellow Ezgi Arık, a PhD candidate in Public Law at Koç University, is researching international tax law. In her PhD research, she focuses on the deconstructive reading of international tax law.
|

|

|
|
Valentina Carraro (VU Amsterdam) joined ACELG and ACIL as a visiting researcher in April 2020. Her research is highly interdisciplinary, combining international law and international relations. She particularly focuses on the fight against torture and other forms of violence (especially violence against women).

|
Frederiek de Vlaming has received NIAS funding for her research project ‘The Impact of Litigating Breaches of International (Humanitarian) Law on Truth and Rehabilitation of Victims – A Case Study.’ Her project is part of the ‘Legal Mobilization: Analyzing Law-Based Advocacy’ theme group. Collaborating in a team of five, each researcher will focus on an aspect of Law-Based Advocacy.

ACIL professor Janne E. Nijman has been appointed Professor of International law at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. She will combine this part-time appointment with her responsibilities at the University of Amsterdam and the T.M.C. Asser Institute.

A new book on legitimacy of international courts, co-edited by Ingo Venzke and with a contribution by Geraldo Vidigal is now available for Open Access download. The other editors of the book Hélène Ruiz Fabri, André Nunes Chaib, and Armin von Bogdandy. The book is published jointly by Nomos Verlag and Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law.

A recent paper by ACIL researchers Stephan W. Schill and Geraldo Vidigal is one of four papers referred to by the Secretariat of UNCITRAL to base their Note on the reform of Investor-State Dispute Settlement.

As Commissioner in the Netherlands National Human Rights Institute (College voor de Rechten van de Mens), Yvonne Donders has contributed to policy advice to the government, as well as information to the general public, about the protection of human rights during the Covid-19 crisis.
