RESEARCH: ADS Management Team

At the ADS Highlights event in December (event report here), Maarten de Rijke was thanked for his long-standing commitment to ADS activities as Chair since 2014. 
Lynda Hardman (pictured) will now take over this position from Maarten from January 2018. Lynda is a Senior Researcher in the Information Access Group at CWI, and Professor of Multimedia Discourse Interaction, Utrecht University. Previously Lynda was President of the Board of Informatics Europe.


Additionally, Jaap Heringa (VU) will join the ADS Management Team and Peter Boncz (CWI) the ADS Supervisory Board.

RESEARCH: Evangelos Kanoulas Appointed Full Professor

We are pleased to announce that ADS Senior Researcher Evangelos Kanoulas, has been appointed by the University Board as full professor in the Department of Operations Management at the Amsterdam Business School (one day per week). Evangelos will still be within the Informatics Institute (UvA) for four days per week.

RESEARCH: ADS & VIVAT Open an "Insurance Lab"

The start of 2018 marks another new joint lab for ADS, this time with insurer VIVAT. Within the new lab, three projects have been defined for PhD students: Customer value models, fraud detection, customer acquisition and multi-touchpoint customer journeys

RESEARCH: ADS Grants for International Visiting Researchers

ADS is pleased to announce that applications are now open for round two of the International Exchange Visits with Insight (Ireland), Tsinghua and Wuhan (China). In the last round of applications five exchange grants were awarded.  

Funding applications are welcome at PhD, postdoc and senior faculty levels. The length of visit is flexible but we envisage a minimum of 3 months. The deadline for applications is 01 February 2018.

RESEARCH: Amsterdam Data Science 2017 Report

2017 has been a highly active period for ADS with many key goals achieved. Our network organisation has continued to grow with new knowledge institutions joining, collaborations with industry established, and a broadened international network. This report summarises our continued growth and our heightened involvement within the Amsterdam region. The report also updates on highlights of the Amsterdam Academic Alliance Data Science (AAA-DS) programme, as we become one joint initiative. You can view the full report HERE

- NWO Launch Industrial Doctorate Programme to allow doctoral students to do their research at a knowledge institute and a participating company. Deadline for applications: 16 January

- UvA Interdisciplinary Doctorate Programme providing funding for doctorate research on interdisciplinary subjects, closely connected to one of the UvA's interdisciplinary BA programmes. Deadline for applications: 28 January

- SIDN (a strong internet for all) funding call opens 01 February with the theme: Responsible AI. Deadline for applications: 12 March

ADS Coffee & Data - Legal Tech - 19 JAN - 09:45 - SPUI25


ADS Coffee & Data offers the opportunity for researchers & business to share knowledge and give insight on a central theme, specifically on 19 January this will be Data Science in Legal Tech. The event will be an opportunity to gain insight on the potential of data science in law and legal practice.

Responsible Data Science - 15 FEB. 4PM - VU

ADS & Big Data Alliance Data Science Career Fair - 28 FEB. 3PM

The Fair will give students, with an interest in a data science career, the chance to connect with companies looking for permanent employees and summer interns in data science.
Companies attending include Adidas, Booking.com, Bol.com, eBay, Elsevier, KLM, amongst others, plus Data Science Startups from the Amsterdam area also.

In collaboration with Amsterdam Center of Entrepreneurship (ACE), ADS will organise a two-day interactive program for MSc & PhD Students. Are you curious about entrepreneurship but do not have a concrete startup idea? Do you believe your research can be transformed into a business case but don’t know where to start? Entrepreneurship in Data Science will allow you to experience all the challenging aspects of starting a company.
