RESEARCH: Hinda Haned, Professor by Special Appointment of Data Science

Hinda Haned has been named professor by special appointment of Data Science at the UvA Faculty of Science. This chair was established on behalf of the Béta Plus Foundation. Hinda Haned’s research focusses on building algorithmic and intelligent learning systems in order to assist users in data-driven decision making. As professor at UvA, Haned will focus on developing methods for responsible data science.

EDUCATION: AUAS Digital Society School Opens

September saw the launch of the Digital Society School: the new form of education within Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) that sees students, researchers and businesses work side by side on digital solutions to social problems. The Digital Society School was officially opened on 7 September by Touria Meliani (Deputy Mayor for Arts and Culture for the City of Amsterdam) and Geleyn Meijer (Rector at AUAS).

ICT with Industry - Call for participation in the January 2019 workshop. The workshop brings together scientists and professionals from industry and governments to work on five exciting case studies. Deadline for applications: 16 November

NWO Crossover - Call for public-private partnerships (PPP), aimed at societal challenges in which the research themes connect several top sectors. The call is open to all scientific disciplines and the target is broadly composed interdisciplinary consortia (consisting of researchers, public and private partners). Deadline: 15 November

On Thursday 20 September, ADS hosted a Meetup event on Smart Cities & Smart Health with presentations from CWI, UvA, and VU researchers, and visitors from Beijing also presenting. 

On Tuesday 25 September, ADS hosted a Deep Dive into Reinforcement Learning. The event was chaired by Zeynep Akata with presentations from Herke van Hoof and Sander Bohte.

Students, Fancy a Free Holiday?

Calling all Students! Want to win your next holiday? Come to the QChallenge Hackathon on 12-13 October. In 2-days student teams will develop a solution for an exciting data-driven business challenge. The hackathon, at Startup Village Science Park, is a collaboration between Qualogy, Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE) and ADS. All students welcome, you just need an interest in data science and AI, and tools such as Python, R and Hadoop.
