Looking back on this year

Dear alumni,

This has undoubtedly been a crazy year. Despite all of the challenges, we would like to take a moment and express our gratitude for you this holiday season! Thank you to all of you who have joined us for our virtual and live events (remember when we could meet in person?), who have volunteered for information days and career panels, and who have continued to cultivate the AUC spirit among your own communities. You are the driving force behind the AUCAA, and we look forward to bringing you even more alumni activities next year.

We wish all members of the AUCAA community a safe and cosy holiday season, and we hope to see you again next year!

Sincerely,
Gerylaine Campos on behalf of the AUCAA Board
Alumni & External Relations Officer

Farewell from Dean Murray Pratt

It's been a pleasure working with many of you while you were students, and also getting to know some alumni from previous years. Now it's my turn to move on from AUC too. You have my warmest wishes in these difficult times and my confidence and best hopes for the future. Keep your sense of wonder, your commitment to equity, and keep being amazing no matter what you do!

Best wishes,

Professor Murray Pratt
M.A.Hons., Glasgow, D.Phil., Oxford
Dean, Amsterdam University College

Support the AUC Scholarship Fund this holiday season!

One of the ways in which you can support diversity in the AUC student body (if you are willing and able), is to become a donor of the ASF. As a university that values diversity so highly, it is essential that talented students are are actually granted the means to participate. The UvA, VU, and AUC are currently the largest donors of the ASF, but more funds are needed in order to support as many talented and diverse students as possible. Even the smallest donations can make a difference, and will be much welcomed.

Philip Elders' 16

Philip Elders' 16

Philip Elders is in the final year of his medical degree at the VU and has served as Dutch youth delegate to the World Health Organization. In this role he tried to raise awareness about the relationship between anthropogenic environmental change and the risk of spillover of zoonotic infections, such as SARS-CoV-2. He has recently published a seroprevalence study on rickettsial infections in Myanmar. These largely neglected zoonotic infections can cause major complications but can easily be treated with antibiotics if recognized on time. Hopefully, these findings will contribute to improved recognition of these infections by healthcare providers in Myanmar.
