Let's reconnect!

Dear alumni,

It's the autumn of re-connection! After a lively summer, we're going back inside and we're  breaking out the cosy energy. In November AUC and the AUCAA are organising a networking event for alumni who are interested in pursuing graduate studies, or want to share their experiences in academia. In December we are enjoying the best of winter in Amsterdam with the Amsterdam Light Festival tour. Don't miss out on the chance to re-kindle old friendships, or to form new ones!

Keep an eye out on the AUCAA's social media and newsletters so you never miss out on an event. And if you're inspired to (co)organise an alumni event, let us know and we can help out.

Best,
Gerylaine Campos

Alumni & External Relations Officer, on behalf of AUCAA board

Invitation to Cato Janssen'19 film screening

Invitation to Cato Janssen'19 film screening

The ethnographic film “We thought it would be fun” shows the experiences of students and teachers of secondary schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on adolescents, (who are less susceptible to the virus but are paradoxically suffering from the COVID-19 mitigation strategies) the film shows the psychosocial burden carried by students during the pandemic. This film is part of the HERoS research (Health Emergency Response in Interconnected Systems), which aims to collect lessons learned and share best practices related to the governance of the COVID-19 crisis within secondary schools. You can register by sending Cato an email.

Zahra Runderkamp'13 moderates panel on inequality in education

Zahra Runderkamp'13 moderates panel on inequality in education

Inequality starts at birth. Many predictions on the course of your life are influenced by the zip code where you grew up. Education should be an equalizer, but that is often not the case. In this third and final installment in the Inequality series, Zahra and a panel of experts investigate inequality of opportunity in education.

Zahra Runderkamp (moderator) is a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Amsterdam. Runderkamp's dissertation is about the representation of women and minorities in Dutch politics.

Charlotte Kröger'15 publishes article on diversity in advanced care planning

Diversity in ethnicity, sexual identity, and socio-economic status plays a big role in a person's expectations and preferences in advanced care planning. In order to investigate how Dutch healthcare care professionals conceptualised diversity in these conversations, Charlotte and colleagues conducted 16 interviews using a thematic discourse analysis. The article highlights the importance of reflecting on diversity discourses and their consequences for professionals involved in end-of-life conversations.

Celebration of the Day of the Dead at AUC: 26 Oct.

The celebration of the Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition combining Pre-Hispanic tradition with Spanish influences of the Catholic Church. Throughout Mexico, Mexicans remember their departed on 1 and 2 November. We are recreating this blended (mestizo) cultural celebration for faculty, students and visitors interested in learning more about this tradition. The presentation will feature an altar created by visual artist Emilio Sánchez Díaz & the Tule Educational Project, a group dedicated to maintaining Mexican culture. All are invited to bring a memento or a photo of loved ones to place on the altar to join with “ofrendas,” or offerings of food, candles and mementos. There will also be live music and the bread of the dead.

Re-imbursement from DUWO

Were you a DUWO tenant between 2010 and 2014? In such case you may have received a refund from DUWO. DUWO has applied for a retroactive refund of energy tax for the period 2010-2014 for former student house tenants. The former residents are entitled to receive this tax refund. This was a considerable and time-consuming undertaking for us, but former tenants will receive a payment in 2022 if they are entitled to an energy tax refund.

Show your support for the AUC Scholarship Fund

One of the ways in which you can support diversity in the AUC student body (if you are willing and able), is to become a donor of the ASF. As a university that values diversity so highly, it is essential that talented students are actually granted the means to participate. The UvA, VU, and AUC are currently the largest donors of the ASF, but more funds are needed in order to support as many talented and diverse students as possible. Even the smallest donations can make a difference, and will be much welcomed.
