Season's greetings from the AUCAA Chair

Dearest alumni,

What a year it has been! For us at AUCAA, 2021 has meant a lot: a beautiful, brand new websitetwo podcast episodes and several on- and offline events. We unfortunately had to put some events on hold - but that will only make 2022 more exciting.

This year, we underwent some major transformations as a board: new statutes, an updated policy plan, and we bid goodbye to longstanding members and welcomed new ones. I received the baton from Julia Keizer'18 as the next chair of AUCAA, and I am excited about what 2022 will bring. Did you know that 2022 is AUCAA's Lustrum year? We are turning ten! What is your favorite memory with AUCAA? Let us know!

In the spirit of the holiday season, I invite you to consider giving back: a small donation to the AUC Scholarship Fund, either as a one-off or even better - a monthly donation! A small amount goes a long way, especially for a young institution like AUC.

Sending you my best wishes for a fun and fuzzy time with your family and friends. Stay safe, stay warm - and till our next event together, take good care!

Cheers,
Thao Lam'16
Chair of the AUCAA

Laurie van der Burg'12 lobbies for climate justice

Laurie van der Burg teamed up with Milieudefensie and BothEnds to petition the Dutch prime minister to sign the international agreement to stop investing in foreign fossil fuel projects. The political pressure this generated contributed to the Netherlands' decision to sign the agreement. However, according to Laurie, this is not yet enough: “Climate justice is still a long way off”.

Alumna Feyoena Crommelin'19 and lecturer Olaf Tans publish article

Reworking her capstone thesis with which she graduated in 2019, Feyoena Crommelin and Olaf Tans have published an article in the (peer-reviewed) International Journal of Cultural Property. It is entitled ‘How to Manage Cultural Space: An Agonistic Analysis of Artistic Moral Rights’ and can be found via the link below. The article analyses the debate about the right of artists to protect their work against alteration and destruction, with the aid of Chantal Mouffe’s insights about the inherent antagonism of the social world. The piece represents a fruitful crossover between cultural studies and legal and social philosophy.

Show your support for the AUC Scholarship Fund

One of the ways in which you can support diversity in the AUC student body (if you are willing and able), is to become a donor of the ASF. As a university that values diversity so highly, it is essential that talented students are actually granted the means to participate. The UvA, VU, and AUC are currently the largest donors of the ASF, but more funds are needed in order to support as many talented and diverse students as possible. Even the smallest donations can make a difference, and will be much welcomed.
