Celebrating 10 years of the AUCAA
|
Dear alumni,
This year the AUCAA is celebrating 10 years of existence. As an association we have come a long way since our early days at the Plantage Muidergracht. Over the past decade, the AUCAA has grown to represent over 2200 alumni, with new members being added each year. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the AUCAA has remained committed to fostering a strong alumni community among our members. This year the AUCAA has big plans to bring you social, profesional, and academic events, starting with the AUC Networking Event on 8 April and the AUCAAxLondon Meet Up in May! Keep an eye out on the AUCAA's Instagram and LinkedIn for the latest events and opportunities.
We are extremely grateful for the continued engagement and support we receive from you. Thank you for making the alumni community the welcoming space it is! It is our pleasure to represent you as the AUCAA board. Best, Gerylaine CamposAlumni & External Relations Officer, on behalf of AUCAA board

In a recent episode of Rébecca's podcast, Kussenpraat, assistant Professor in migration and sexuality history Andrew Shield PHD talks about sexual politics and migration history in the Netherlands. We often understand the history of the sexual revolution and feminist and LGBT movements separately from migration histories. Looking at the common histories, however, shows us new insights to better understand the present. Tune in to learn about homonationalist politics, migrants in LGBT communities and more!

Claudia is a junior lecturer for the Athena Research and Education Institute and is also teaching a course at AUC. She recently published an op-ed in Trouw. In the article she argues that the narrative that sexual misconduct is only perpetrated by "bad apples" disguises how commonplace it really is. Simply calling for more people to report sexual misconduct does not address the root cause of the issue, rather we need to make talking about sexual misconduct less taboo. In that vein, she was also recently featured on the podcast Sense Talk, to discuss sexual assault.

AUC's student council shares a call for donations: "Our thoughts are with the people affected by the crisis in Ukraine. We are here for you and we are here to help with any personal circumstances that arise. We worked together with the Science Faculty Student Council to set up a donation point for the people of Ukraine. This is done under the Students for Ukraine organization and they’re providing logistical support and are organizing donation spots all over the Netherlands." DM the student council for more information on how to contribute.

Karen Maex will resign from her position as Rector Magnificus of the University of Amsterdam on 15 July 2022, after almost nine years in Amsterdam. During her rectorship, Maex often spoke up about the position and role of the university in society, as well as focussing on themes such as internationalisation, digitalisation and the autonomy of science. She also frequently advocated for cooperation between European universities, especially within the League of European Research Universities (LERU), in order to contribute to the tackling of 'wicked problems' such as climate change, sustainability and poverty. The Supervisory Board, in consultation with all relevant sections of the UvA will shortly begin the recruitment and selection process for Maex's successor.

In her opinion piece (published in Dutch), AUC lecturer Dr. Tavecchio raises questions about the ethics of accepting booster vaccinations (on top of already being double vaccinated) while other parts of the world have not yet received initial doses. Throughout the piece, she weighs some different ethical pros and cons of accepting a booster dose amid a global pandemic that continues to exacerbate existing inequalities. You can read the full piece via the link below.

The AUC course Peace Lab hosted its second digital edition focusing on Rwanda over the course of January. A counterpart to the June edition which focuses on Kosovo, students would normally travel to Rwanda to carry out fieldwork and learn about post-conflict reconstruction and state-building first-hand. However, due to continued travel restrictions in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus, students once again participated in digital fieldwork, which included meeting organisations such as the UN, NGOs, youth peacebuilders, women’s groups, and local residents during a 10-day virtual trip. You can read their final reflections (which are still being published!) via the link below.

One of the ways in which you can support diversity in the AUC student body (if you are willing and able), is to become a donor of the ASF. As a university that values diversity so highly, it is essential that talented students are actually granted the means to participate. The UvA, VU, and AUC are currently the largest donors of the ASF, but more funds are needed in order to support as many talented and diverse students as possible. Even the smallest donations can make a difference, and will be much welcomed.
