Looking back on the Homecoming Event

On August 28 2021, AUC and the AUCAA welcomed back 80 alumni for the AUC Homecoming event. Homecoming primarily honoured the Class of 2020, to give them the chance to reunite after not having an in-person graduation last year. During the event, alumni enjoyed speeches by Dean Martin van Hees and members of the AUCAA. The highlight of the event, however, was reconnecting with old friends over some beer in the late summer sun.

Keep an eye out for more events in the AUCAA newsletter and social media.

Thank you to Julia Keizer'18 and Sophie Jansen'15

Thank you to Julia Keizer'18 and Sophie Jansen'15

With great sadness we say goodbye to two long standing AUCAA board members who are stepping down this autumn. Sophie and Julia joined the AUCAA board in 2019 and 2020, and have since contributed greatly to keeping the AUCAA up and running during difficult times. They have organised events such as the social walk and political panels, and have left their mark on AUC's alumni community. Thank you ladies for the hard work, and good luck with your next endeavours!

Join the AUCAA Board: apply by 31 October 2021

Rabiya Chaudry'19 is UvA's newest junior lecturer

Rabiya joins the UvA as a junior lecturer, only two short years after graduating from AUC. She shares about what inspired her love of teaching: "Since I was a young girl, I have loved teaching. I always aspired to become a lecturer who would inspire students and have the ability to shape their academic journey. My passion increased during my time at AUC after being taught by amazing and inspiring Professors, who played a crucial role in my personal growth. Therefore, I applied as a junior lecturer to enrich students’ academic journey and contribute to their growth through my multicultural background."

Aiden Ta'21 awarded Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

Aiden Ta'21 awarded Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

Aiden recently received the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship, which is awarded to outstanding students at the University of Amsterdam. He reflects: "I got into a few Master programmes in Amsterdam and London which I liked for different reasons. But when I needed to make a decision, the world was still going crazy. As much as I like to be adventurous, I also sought certainty in that trying time. So I thought “okay I like the programme, like this city, and am lucky enough to have a support system here that keeps me grounded, so why not?"

Black Heritage Night at VU: 28 October

Black Heritage Night at VU: 28 October

For centuries, Amsterdam was a centre of trade in enslaved peoples, but few people are aware of this aspect of the city’s history. This past summer, the mayor of Amsterdam officially apologised for the active role of city aldermen in the commercial system of colonial slavery. During Black Heritage Night, on Thursday 28 October, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam wants to encourage you to pause and reflect on this painful chapter in the city’s history. At the same time, they will be celebrating black cultural heritage with the Martin Luther King Lecture, presented this year by Jennifer Tosch, the exhibition ‘Constructing Space’ and a screening of the documentary ‘King: A filmed record...Montgomery to Memphis’.

Show your support for the AUC Scholarship Fund

One of the ways in which you can support diversity in the AUC student body (if you are willing and able), is to become a donor of the ASF. As a university that values diversity so highly, it is essential that talented students are actually granted the means to participate. The UvA, VU, and AUC are currently the largest donors of the ASF, but more funds are needed in order to support as many talented and diverse students as possible. Even the smallest donations can make a difference, and will be much welcomed.
