Om maatschappelijke problemen op te kunnen lossen met wetenschap, is het belangrijk dat mensen wetenschappers vertrouwen. Onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Amsterdam onderzochten een nog niet bekend aspect van dit vertrouwen: namelijk het vertrouwen per vakgebied. Ze ontdekten dat dit sterk varieert, waarbij politicologen en economen het minst werden vertrouwd en neurologen en mariene biologen het meest. In de studie van Vukašin Gligorić, Gerben van Kleef en Bastiaan Rutjens, met 2780 deelnemers uit de Verenigde Staten, werd vertrouwen in 45 verschillende soorten wetenschappers onderzocht, variërend van agronomen tot zoölogen. Volgens de auteurs is niet eerder het vertrouwen in zo'n groot aantal verschillende wetenschappers onderzocht. Deelnemers beantwoordden vragen over hoe zij wetenschappers zien op dimensies van competentie, assertiviteit, moraliteit en warmte. De onderzoekers ontdekten dat mensen over het algemeen geneigd waren wetenschappers te vertrouwen. Het vertrouwensniveau varieerde echter aanzienlijk afhankelijk van het vakgebied van de wetenschapper, en dat vooral twee belangrijke factoren het vertrouwen bepalen. The 2024 Student Council elections are coming up! The student councils consult with the Executive Board and the deans and have the right of consent and advice. They can therefore really make a difference in important cases. Dr. Sahar El Aidy has been appointed professor of Microbiome Engineering at the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam. Driven by a passion for understanding the adaptive responses of bacteria to different stimuli, El Aidy’s lab studies the profound implications of the gut microbiome for human health. Her team investigates microbial metabolism using cutting-edge analytical chemistry and microbiology techniques to identify previously unknown chemical signals generated by gut microbiota. Their recent breakthrough revealed how gut microbes can compromise the effectiveness of medications for Parkinson’s patients. We wish her the best of luck! Prof. dr. Christa Boer is door het College van Bestuur benoemd tot decaan van de Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen (FMG) van de UvA. De benoeming gaat in per 1 september 2024 en is voor een periode van vier jaar. Boer wordt tevens benoemd tot hoogleraar aan de FMG. Ze is nu nog hoogleraar Medisch Onderwijs aan de VU Amsterdam en vice-decaan Onderwijs bij Amsterdam UMC. We wensen haar veel succes! Het lijkt wel of er steeds meer politici zijn die winst boeken met boos gedrag. Toch kiezen mensen in het algemeen liever voor een blije gezichtsuitdrukking en positieve toon. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek naar hoe kiezers op de emoties van politici reageren. Door het meten van onder andere gezichtsuitdrukkingen en hersenactiviteit achterhaalde politicoloog Maaike Homan dat mensen blije expressies meer waarderen dan boze, maar de reactie wel sterk afhangt van de situatie. Mensen zijn heel vatbaar voor de emoties die ze van het gezicht van een ander aflezen. Ook bij politici geven emoties informatie over hun intenties. Maar wat voor invloed hebben die emoties op kiezers? Volgens Homan meer dan we vaak denken. "Mijn onderzoek laat zien dat alleen al het zien van een politicus emoties oproept in kiezers, helemaal als deze politicus ook zelf emoties toont, en dat dit invloed op ons stemgedrag kan hebben." Laura Cull Ó Maoilearca has been appointed professor by special appointment in Performance Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities. The chair, which was established in collaboration with the Academy of Theatre and Dance of the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, is located at the intersection of performing arts, philosophy, posthumanism, and artistic research. The establishment of this new chair provides a strong impetus to the development of performance philosophy as relatively young field which foregrounds the dual question of how performance thinks and how thinking is performed – paying particular attention to the often unequal value given to different ways of knowing. The times we currently live in require a deepening and strengthening of a dialogue between science and the arts. The new chair, which begins in September 2024 for 5 years, builds a crucial bridge to make this dialogue sustainable over the next years. We wish her the best of luck!
