Starting 1 October 2017, Alexander Schoenhuth of Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam is appointed Professor ‘Genome Data Science’ at the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University. It concerns a part-time appointment for one day a week.

The research field of Schoenhuth concerns Genome Data Science. He focuses on the development of algorithms that can process and manipulate extreme large amounts of genome data. Eventually this will make it possible to treat patients individually (Genome Data 2 Person).

At Utrecht University Schoenhuth works with researchers of the 'Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics' group, and also with several researchers of UMCU. He is closely involved in the ‘ProjectMine’ project, with the aim of fighting 'amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)' – on of the largest genome projects worldwide so far.
