Secondary Criminal Liability for International Crimes and Serious Human Rights Violations

Marc Tiernan joined ACIL and the department of Criminal Law as a PhD Candidate in December 2019. His research forms part of a broader project on “The Outer Limits of Secondary Liability for International Crimes and Serious Human Rights Violations”. Specifically, Marc's research will focus on secondary criminal liability.

Marc holds an LLB from Trinity College Dublin (2014) and an LLM in International Criminal Law from the University of Amsterdam (cum laude, 2017). Prior to starting his PhD, Marc worked as a legal consultant with two defence teams at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and as a research assistant with the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

He is one of several PhD candidates working on the 'Rethinking SLIC' research project directed by prof. Göran Sluiter. The project is funded through a VICI-grant by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Marc will work under the supervision of professors Göran Sluiter, Denis Abels, and Sergey Vasiliev.
