Maria Weimer has been appointed as one of the independent experts who will advise the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission on a project titled ‘Challenges and opportunities for the future of democracy.’

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) aims to explore key issues that could strengthen and innovate the current democratic systems to better face future trends and critical challenges, to anticipate and respond to them, and, in doing so, to increase trust in democracy.

Dr Weimer will join a multidisciplinary team of eight distinguished academics from across Europe, and together they will conduct a scoping study that will examine the key challenges, emerging trends and drivers that may shape the future of democracy. This study will serve as the basis for the subsequent work on this project by the Joint Research Centre.
