2019 ESIL Research Forum

On Thursday, 4 and Friday, 5 April 2019, the Institute of International and European Law will host the European Society of International Law's annual Research Forum. The ESIL Research Forum is a scholarly conference that promotes engagement with research in progress by members of the Society. It has a small and intensive format targeting scholars at an early stage of their careers. The selected speakers will receive comments on their paper presentations from members of the ESIL Board and invited experts during the Forum.

The 2019 ESIL Research Forum addresses the topic:

“The Rule of Law in International and Domestic Contexts: Synergies and Challenges”.

The recent backlash against international law, as well as current domestic developments, put the rule of law to the test at the international as well as the domestic level. This prompts us to revisit and perhaps reconsider its concept and relevance. Therefore, a central task will be to determine whether we can (still) speak of a rule of law at the international level, and if so, in which terms. Furthermore, the close interlinkage between the international and national readings of this concept inevitably leads to the question if and how these international developments influence the constitutional framework of states and vice versa.

Side Events: On Wednesday, 3 April 2019, seven ESIL Interest Groups will convene side events on the occasion of the Research Forum. The following side events will be hosted:

  • A Workshop on Sound Science-Based Regulation in the Post-Truth Era: Domestic and International Rule of Law Under Fire, a joint event convened by the Interest Group on International Environmental Law and the Interest Group on International Bio Law (Programme)
